Edmund’s rise mirrors improving state of British tennis

Before he arrived at Flushing Meadows for this year’s US Open, Kyle Edmund only had experience of the second round of a Grand Slam tournament.

But after disposing of American John Isner in four sets in New York, the 21-year-old booked a place in the fourth round of the tournament and a dream clash with Novak Djokovic.

Regardless of the outcome of that match, and Edmund is a pricey 9/1 outsider for victory, this will comfortably be the South African-born player’s best performance in a major tournament.

It’s the result of steady improvement for Edmund, who has claimed two ATP Challenge Tour titles during 2016, finish runner-up in another and maintain his steady climb up the world rankings.

He started his stint in America by defeating Richard Gasquet in straight sets in the opening round, before dismantling Ernesto Escobar and Isner to seal a fourth-round spot.

Although the result means meeting the world number one in a daunting Grand Slam environment, this won’t actually be the Briton’s first time facing Djokovic.

The pair met earlier this year in the Miami Masters and although the Serb was a predictably comfortable winner, that experience will certainly stand Edmund in good stead.

The rise of Edmund’s stock is certainly in keeping with the growing stock of Great British tennis in general.

Andy Murray continues to perform at an elite level and is also into the fourth round in New York, while Johanna Konta is blazing a trail in women’s game.

The latter’s fourth round opponent is Anastasija Sevastova and we make the number 13 seed 1/4 to march into the next round.
