Davis Cup: GB’s golden boys will too strong for Argentina

Great Britain face Argentina in the Davis Cup semi-finals this weekend, and though the opposition boast the rejuvenated Juan Martin del Potro, GB’s golden generation should be victorious in Glasgow come Sunday afternoon.
Having waited 79 years to reclaim the Davis Cup last year, Great Britain are just five matches away from reappearing in the final, and things will begin with a bang when Andy Murray takes on Del Potro in front of a raucous home crowd for the Scot.
But there’s much more to this weekend’s contest than an Olympic-final rematch, and Murray alone cannot steer GB to victory.
In the third tier of Davis Cup rankings as recently as 2011, the Lawn Tennis Association should take great pride in the work that has gone on to bring Team GB back to the elite.
And with the talent at their disposal right now, GB could be making it successive Davis Cup titles with Kyle Edmund, Dan Evans and Jamie Murray in the foursome.
Edmund has enjoyed his best year yet, and reached the fourth round at the US Open, while Evans had a match point versus eventual Flushing Meadows champion Stan Wawrinka.
Jamie Murray also heads to Glasgow in great form, who added the US Open men’s doubles title to his success at the Australian Open earlier this year, and is ranked fourth in the world.
And then there’s Andy Murray, who has enjoyed his best year in Slams from a statistical point of view.
Having won his second Wimbledon championship, a second Olympic gold medal, and become a father, a Davis Cup title would really be the icing on a huge 2016 cake for Britain’s finest.
Murray’s commitment and drive to become the best has filtered through to the rest of the team, and GB have arguably never had it better.
It says so much about the quality of the squad today that GB are 10/11 favourites to win the tournament, and 2/9 to defeat Argentina.
Aside from Del Potro, there really is very little for the British quartet to fear, with Federico Delbonis, Leonardo Mayer and Guido Pella mustering one third round Slam appearance between them in 2016.
Having endured decades of disappointment, these really are great times for British tennis, and another Davis Cup run is testament to this golden generation.
