Conservatives 1/500 to retain Witney as Cameron resigns as MP

David Cameron’s decision to resign as an MP has resulted in the most one-sided by-election betting in recent political history, according to our political traders.
Two months on from standing down as Prime Minister, Cameron is also stepping away from the seat he has held since 2001, triggering a by-election in Oxfordshire.
Created as a constituency in 1983, Witney has voted Tory in every Election, with party percentages never dropping below 43 per cent.
Cameron won last year’s vote with over 60 per cent.
Unsurprisingly then, the Conservatives are 1/500 to retain the seat, with the odds giving next to no chance to Labour improving on their general election second place.
The bookies quoted 10/1 that Cameron would ever return to the Commons.
Matthew Shaddick of Ladbrokes said: “We’re keenly awaiting news of who will throw their hat in the ring for the Tory nomination, as that’s likely to be a more lively betting heat than the actual by-election.”
