Back Murray for SPOTY before Davis Cup win makes him odds-on

He’s the favourite to claim 2016’s Sports Personality of the Year award, and we reckon you should be backing Andy Murray sooner rather than later to win the annual accolade.
Britain’s number one tennis player is 11/8 to win the gong, and with more success potentially awaiting Murray this year in the Davis Cup, that price could shorten to well under evens.
After melting the hearts of a nation during his post-Wimbledon speech to Sue Barker in 2012, Murray has featured in the top trio three times in the last four years of the BBC gala, winning it in 2013 and last December.
The victory last winter was largely down to hauling Great Britain to a first Davis Cup success since 1936, with tennis’ biggest international tournament certainly resonating amongst the home faithful.
And you can be sure Murray’s odds will shorten, should he add another Davis Cup success to a sterling year on the singles tour.
The Scot has enjoyed statistically his strongest ever season, posting a personal best record of 23-3 in Slams this year.
Throw in three Slam final appearances, and of course, another Wimbledon title, and the Scot has done pretty well all told in 2016.
And as you may have noticed, it was an Olympic year too, and the Scot followed up his SW19 success by claiming the Gold in Rio.
He’s got the hearts of the public, he’s statistically playing better than ever and he’s added another hatful of titles to an already stellar CV.
Oh, and he even became a father this year too, winning-over the nation just that little bit more.
