Aviva Premiership: Who sets the standard after Gameweek 3?
Despite scoring 16 more points during the first three Aviva Premiership gameweeks than any other side, big-spending Wasps have barely moved in Ladbrokes’ outright markets thanks to double-champions Saracens’ solid if less spectacular start.
There’s no doubt the Coventry-based side have made the most impressive start to the new campaign, following up a come-from-behind 25-20 victory at home to Exeter during the opening weekend by beating Leicester 34-22 on their own patch.
Battering bottom-club Bristol 70-22 over the weekend is an even better result than it looks, as Andy Robinson’s newly-promoted outfit got within two points of Harlequins at Twickenham Stoop in their first Premiership match back after seven seasons away.
Dai Young’s charges’ victory over the Tigers was their first at Welford Road since 2008, and Wasps are only likely to get better when injured duo James Haskell and Kurtley Beale, the highest-paid player in England after arriving from Australia over the summer, make their returns.
With South Africa’s Willie le Roux – arguably the best full-back in world rugby – due at the Ricoh Arena in January, Young has a serious team on his hands, but Wasps’ odds of winning the title for the first time in nine years have been nibbled in just a fraction since the start of term.
Sarries were 5/4 ante-post favourites and have gone odds on at 5/6 following wins at home to Worcester and Northampton and on the road against Chiefs, with all three sides seen off by at least 15 points.
Mark McCall’s men finally added a continental crown to the three Premiership titles they’ve accrued over the past six seasons with a European Champions Cup triumph last term, and the Barnet-based bruisers show little signs of letting up.
