Why Swansea fans should be excited about impending frontman

Since Swansea entered the Premier League in the 2011/12 season their striker turnover has been quite remarkable.
From Danny Graham through to Michu, Wilfried Bony and Bafetimbi Gomis the number of goal getters used at the Liberty Stadium is quite eye watering. And that list doesn’t even consider bit-part players like Itay Schechter, Leroy Lita, Alvaro Vasquez, Marvin Emnes, Eder and Alberto Paloschi.
The revolving door has been swinging once again this summer with Fernando Llorente arriving from Sevilla. However with Gomis, Eder and Paloschi all gone Swans boss Francesco Guidolin will need more than just the 31-year-old to call on this season.
Reports in the latest gossip columns suggest the Welsh outfit have indentified their next frontman, with unwanted Atletico Madrid striker Borja Baston the target.
Baston, who has only ever played one league game for Los Colchoneros despite joining their youth system at the age of four, could be available for £15m and it’s a move that should excite Swans fans.
Relatively young, but with a host of experience from numerous loan moves away from Vicente Calderon Stadium, the 23-year-old has developed into a regular goal scorer.
After improving returns of four and nine league strikes respectively for Real Murcia and SD Huesca, Baston sprang into life for then-Segunda-Division outfit Deportivo in 2013/14.
The Madrid native scored 10 league goals in 33 appearances that season, then followed up with 22 in 38 for Real Zaragoza in the Spanish second tier the following year.
Last term saw the former Spain U19 international get his first crack at top-flight football, and he didn’t disappoint.
Sent out to Eibar for the campaign, Baston netted 18 times in 36 La Liga games to help the Basque club achieve an impressive 14th-place finish.
That grounding should help the Spaniard settle well within Swansea’s set up, while the presence of countryman Llorente will certainly help.
Young enough to offer his peak years to the Welsh outfit and with the pedigree to succeed – he was the top scorer at both the 2009 U17 World Cup and 2011 U19 European Championship – Baston could be the man to jam the club’s constant striker shuffle.
