West Ham lead wide-open race to sign Jack Wilshere

Published:

Jack Wilshere is just 6/1 to join West Ham before this summer’s deadline day draws to a close, in what would undoubtedly be one of the biggest shocks of this year’s transfer window.

Arsene Wenger will allow the English midfielder to leave the Emirates on loan, given the talent the French boss has at his disposal in central midfield, and there are a whole host of clubs in the mix for his signature.

WIlshere has spent his whole career with the North London club, bar a short-term loan at Bolton Wanderers back in 2010, and is a huge fan favourite following his loyalty to the team in recent years.

But it’s his injury problems which have proved to be of concern to supporters and coaches alike, with the England international failing to maintain full fitness for a season since the 2010-11 campaign.

In fact, of Arsenal’s 231 league games since Wilshere’s return from Bolton in 2010, the player who was once considered the future of English football has represented his club in just 44.59 per cent of them.

And in 105 league appearances for the Gunners, WIlshere – an attack-minded midfielder – has found the net on just seven occasions.

Wenger is against the idea of selling and Wilshere will be equally as keen to remain at the club in the long-term, but with Granit Xhaka, Mohamed Elneny, Francis Coquelin, Aaron Ramsey, Santi Cazorla and Mesut Ozil all currently fighting for a place in the Arsenal midfield, Wilshere faces stiff competition for game time.

And it’s minutes on the pitch Wenger feels Wilshere needs to kick-start his career again, which is why a loan deal seems the most likely outcome this summer.
