Watford’s Pereyra capture is our Premier League Signing of the Week

Published:

Watford’s announcement earlier this week that they had welcomed Roberto Pererya to Vicarage Road from Juventus brought plenty of smiles from Hornets supporters, and the move has also claimed our Premier League signing of the Week award.

We could easily have gone for Man City signing Claudio Bravo, or Crystal Palace welcoming Christian Benteke from Liverpool, but those two deals had rumbled on for so long, it feels like they were signed a month ago.

So it’s Watford’s signing of a two-time Serie A winner which has really caught our eye.

The Hornets have also signed Younes Kaboul and Daryl Janmaat from north-east duo Sunderland and Newcastle respectively, as new boss Walter Mazzarri looks to take the Hertfordshire club into the top-half.

Pererya’s acquisition could prove to be the most significant however.

At just £11m, Watford have landed an attacking midfielder capped 10 times by Argentina, and who was a near ever-present in Juve’s dominant 2014-15 league success.

Having spent that year on loan in Turin from Udinese, Juve paid £12m for his services permanently just a year ago, only for injury to restrict the 25-year-old to just 13 league appearances.

And with the Italian giants signing Marko Pjaca, Mario Lemina and Miralem Pjanic this summer, competition for midfield starting places in Turin suddenly became intense.

A move to Watford could prove to be a dream for both player and club then, with each out to make a statement this season.

The Hornets have enjoyed a steady start to the campaign, drawing with Southampton on the opening day before conceding a late winner to Chelsea.

With Arsenal and Manchester United to play in the next few weeks however, Pereyra has the perfect chance to announce himself to the Watford faithful and show the form which made him so intergral to Juve two seasons ago.
