Rashford earns Man United win and himself a bigger role

Jose Mourinho doesn’t usually place much trust in youth. But as the Portuguese maintained his 100 per cent record with Manchester United he had a teenager to thank.

Marcus Rashford came off the bench to score the late winner that gave the Red Devils all three points against Hull and in doing so became a significant piece of history in his new boss’ career.

After the match, Mourinho reserved some special praise for the England international, hinting that a larger role within the team may be around the corner.

“Rashford is very good. He gave us diversity. He’s going to play a lot of matches,” the former Chelsea manager said, which will surely be music to the ears of not just the striker, but Sam Allardyce as well.

The England manager will name his first Three Lions squad on Sunday evening and will no doubt be hugely encouraged by the contribution Rashford made at the KCOM Stadium.

Introduced in the 70th minute in place of Juan Mata, the 18-year-old played more key passes and had more shots in his brief time on the pitch than the Spaniard managed before him.

Whether it’s enough to earn the three-cap international a spot in the starting XI next time out in the Manchester derby remains to be seen, but he certainly hasn’t done his chances any harm.

Both teams have taken maximum points in the league thus far, with City still to play West Ham in the third round of fixtures.

Although meeting so early on in the season isn’t likely to play a pivotal role in denting their rivals’ title hopes, it’ll be a hotly contested encounter nonetheless.
