Premier League expected to smash the £1bn barrier this summer

Ladbrokes have made it just 6/5 for Premier League clubs to surpass the £1bn spending mark in this transfer window following the astronomical fee Manchester United forked out on Paul Pogba.
Last season currently holds the record for the total amount spent at £835m, and the signings of John Stones and Paul Pogba this morning have meant we’ve seen just short of £781m spent so far this year – and there’s still three weeks to go.
It almost looks a certainty that this will be the most expensive summer of all time in the top flight, given the seemingly endless pits of money at the disposal of every manager.
It seems West Ham are still on the hunt for a marquee signing to welcome to their new home, while Crystal Palace and Stoke are set to battle it out for West Brom striker Saido Berahino.
And should a deal for Berahino take place, that would leave the Baggies in the market for another striker, while Arsenal fans continue to wait – albeit somewhat impatiently – for Arsene Wenger to add some more quality up front.
And then we have Deadline Day – or Panic Buy Day as it’s also known.
All in all, you can expect a hectic three weeks as teams continue to build for the season ahead, and while the clock continues to tick, the cheques continue to be written, making the 6/5 for £1bn+ to be spent in the Premier League this summer a great price..
Pogbagate has undoubtedly been the talk of the summer so far, but the bookies are also offering 10/1 for the Frenchman’s fee to be topped before September, while it’s just 6/4 for Mourinho to smash the record transfer fee again during his time at United.
A Ladbrokes spokesperson said: “Mourinho has made his mark in this summer’s transfer window and you can expect others to follow suit.”
“With many deals yet to be completed, it seems inevitable the £1bn barrier will be smashed.”
