Man United fan backs dream home record with #WhatAreTheOdds bet

Despite a patchy campaign under Louis van Gaal last season, Manchester United lost just two Premier League games at Old Trafford.

And with optimism high following Jose Mourinho’s appointment as manager and a raft of big-name signings arriving in the north-west, one confident fan has put in a #WhatAreTheOdds bet for the Red Devils to go unbeaten in the Premier League for the entire 2016-17 season at 9/1. So, can they go one – or rather two – better than last season?

There’s certainly no doubt they have the right boss in charge to make Old Trafford a fortress. The Portuguese gaffer enjoyed an unprecedented nine-year, 151-game streak without a home league defeat, spanning his time at Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid.

And the early signs under Mourinho have been good, with well-deserved victories over Leicester in the Community Shield and Bournemouth in the Premier League. There’s also a recent precedent of United enjoying an unbeaten home campaign – 18 wins and one draw – as they sauntered to the title in 2010-11.

Still, this United side will have to overcome a record which has seen them lose 17 home league games in the last five seasons – though that figure is warped by David Moyes’ disastrous tenure at the club.

But while remaining undefeated at Old Trafford throughout the year is a big ask, the quality of United’s players, their manager’s astonishingly good home record and the fact they’ve achieved the feat before all make the 9/1 on offer look like extremely good value indeed.

Their first home game of the season is the Friday night meeting with Southampton, who were dispatched 3-2 at the Theatre of Dreams last time out. United are 4/9 for victory, with a repeat of last season’s winning scoreline at St Mary’s priced at 28/1.
