Diego Costa to score plenty this season, but no more than 20

Published:

Chelsea striker Diego Costa will be a regular goalscorer this season, but the former Atletico Madrid man won’t be going above the 20-goal mark, at least, that’s the verdict of today’s poll.

Costa was his classic self in the Blues’ Monday night opener versus West Ham, with the Spaniard both a thorn in the referees’ side while also netting the match winner.

So following his goal last night, we put the question to our Twitter followers and simply asked you to tell us how many times Costa will put the ball in the net this season.

The clear winner was somewhere between 11-20 goals, with 68 per cent backing the Brazilian-born Spaniard to end up safely in double figures.

The 27-year-old is already off the mark as he begins his third season in English football, but if Chelsea are to launch a title challenge, they’ll need Costa to be a regular source of goals.

Following a blistering start to life in the Premier League with 20 strikes in his first year, Costa failed to kick on as Chelsea struggled last term, netting only 12 times.

According to today’s poll, it’s an equal chance that the Spaniard will either have a woeful year or a superb one, with 0-10 and 21-30 goals each receiving 14 per cent of the vote.

And finally we reckon a few optimistic Chelsea fans may have had their say today too, with four per cent backing Costa to score over 30 times.

The forward’s next chance to get among the goals will be this Saturday, when the Pensioners head to Watford.

After netting a brace against the Hornets last season, Costa could be set to rapidly make his way towards double figures pretty quickly this term.

The bookies make it 14/1 the Chelsea man wins this year’s top goalscorer award, and if he continues his current form, those odds will quickly tumble.
