Craig Beattie on his little slice of Edinburgh City history

Published:

Craig Beattie has played on some of the biggest stages for clubs like Crystal Palace, Heart of Midlothian and Celtic, but the veteran striker enjoyed one of the finest moments of his career for Ladbrokes League 2 side Edinburgh City – netting the club’s first ever SPFL goal.

The Former Scotland international and Celtic striker Beattie, now 32, joined Edinburgh earlier this summer to add a touch of experience to manager Gary Jardine’s side, and found the net during the club’s first-ever match in Ladbrokes League Two.

City ended up on the wrong end of a 3-2 defeat on opening day, but Beattie will cherish his unforgettable contribution to the club’s history.

Speaking exclusively to Ladbrokes News, he said: “I’ve enjoyed it so far. We’re working really, really hard to stop conceding the goals.

“It’s a big step up for a lot of the lads from what they’ve been used to, but I’ve seen enough to remain confident that we can do something memorable this season”, Beattie continued.

And the experienced hitman predicts a very positive future for the Citizens following their entrance into the Ladbrokes SPFL.

“It’s exciting”, claimed the former Scotland international. “The club has to make itself the Partick Thistle of Edinburgh; Obviously Hearts and Hibs are huge clubs but I think Edinburgh City have got to aim to add that competitive edge in the capital.”

But whatever the future holds for the Meadowbank Stadium club, Beattie is focused on savouring the experience, explaining: ““I just want to enjoy my football. I want to play as much as possible, and score a few goals whilst helping the lads around me. I want to help the team achieve something. “

However, he’s already made one Edinburgh City memory which will last him a lifetime.

“I scored the club’s first competitive goal in the Ladbrokes SPFL, so it’s a nice little bit of history for myself, really. In 20 years’ time, I could be telling my grandchildren that I scored their first goal”, the former Ayr United hitman reflected.

Edinburgh City head to Cowdenbeath this afternoon, with both sides looking for their first points of the season – and it’s 11/2 for the Citizens to chalk up a historic victory.
