Countdown Boost: Champions Leicester get the final boosts

Published:

It’s here! It’s finally here! OK, almost. It’s Premier League eve and the final day before someone’s season takes a sour turn or an unexpected upswing. For reigning champions Leicester, despite last year’s heroics, few are expecting the Foxes to repeat their underdog success this time around.

That’s not to say Claudio Ranieri’s charges will have a nightmare season, merely that the competition is stronger than ever before, too strong, perhaps.

But having held on to the core of last season’s squad, losing only N’Golo Kante to Chelsea, there’s every reason the Foxes should be in the right half of the table, even as they enter a first foray into Champions League football.

So as our Premier League Countdown Boosts come to an end, we’re offering these four specials on the Foxes for one day only…

08:00-12:00: Leicester to win their first 3 games was 8/1, NOW 10/1

A bad start could really hamper Leicester this year, but Ranieri will be desperate to take advantage of a generous fixture list.

An away trip to Hull – lacking a manager and a squad – is followed by home games versus Arsenal and Swansea.

The Gunners did win 5-2 at the King Power last term, but with defensive concerns for London side, and a much more-savvy Leicester, even the trickiest of this opening trio looks plenty winnable.

12:00-15:00: Leicester to finish in the Bottom Half was 11/5, NOW 14/5

This is one for those who expect the east Midlands side to suffer a second-season backlash.

With such a competitive Premier League in store, could the extra toll from the Champions League have a severely adverse effect on the Foxes’ domestic success?

15:00-18:00: Jamie Vardy to be Top Premier League Goalscorer was 16/1, NOW 20/1

You couldn’t go a minute without hearing about Jamie Vardy last season, and after a goal in the Community Shield, the Leicester forward looks as sharp as ever.

Vardy fired in 24 goals last term, missing out to Tottenham’s Harry Kane by just one strike, and with Ahmed Musa brought in this summer to offer pacey support up front and out wide, Vardy could get even more chances this time around.

18:00-22:00: Leicester to win the Premier League was 28/1, NOW 40/1

They’ll never be 5000/1 again, but we round off our Premier League Countdown Boosts by enhancing the reigning champions to 40/1.

Man City, Man United and Chelsea are all adapting under new managers, while Arsenal and Tottenham are suffering frustrating fortunes in the transfer market.

All of that, plus Liverpool perhaps still shy of title-winning quality, who could have the heart or mindset to rule out football’s greatest underdogs?
