Watch: Scottish Football Gold – Larsson lob seals it for Celtic

Published:

On this day in 1997, Celtic signed Henrik Larsson for £650,000, and continuing our trip down memory lane, we thought it would be fitting to include the Swedish striker in today’s Scottish Football Gold.

Though Larsson’s arrival in ’97 coincided with Celtic’s ten-year wait for a Scottish Premier League trophy coming to an end, today’s feature comes from 2000 – where Martin O’Neill was managing in his first ever Old Firm derby against Rangers.

Before the game at Celtic Park, both sides had won their opening four of the season, and many considered the winner of the match to go on and lift the league title come May.

That was exactly what happened as O’Neill led his side to their first domestic treble since 1968.

Larsson’s wonderfully executed lob came in the second half as Celtic were 3-1 up. (new sentence) And if there was ever any doubt about a potential Rangers comeback having been three down, that was soon diminished with the Swedish striker’s effort.

Re-live the memorable moment below…

Celtic went on to win the game 6-2 and finished the season an incredible 15 points ahead of Dick Advocaat’s men in first place.
