Watch: Scottish Football Gold – Jim Hamilton wonder goal

Published:

Our trip down memory lane has so far been spent reliving some of the biggest goals in recent Scottish football history. Some have been title deciders and others have finished off the unlikeliest of comebacks.

Although today’s strike achieved neither of the above – it’s probably the best one yet.

It was January 2006, and while thousands of teenage girls were waiting to see if Shayne Ward had retained number one spot in the charts with That’s My Goal, 11,503 Motherwell and Celtic fans were about to witness Jim Hamilton’s one.

Celtic had taken the lead at Fir Park thanks to a Maciej Zurawski strike, but shortly before the interval, Hamilton ensured Well weren’t going to go in a goal down with this effort…

We thought that moment would signal the end of football. We thought everyone would go home thinking about that strike in their sleep and that children would grow up studying Jim Hamilton, watching the goal on a loop forever.

Unfortunately none of that happened.

Instead Celtic went on to win the game 3-1 and Hamilton went on to play for another five years, finishing his career at East Fife.

But still, what a finish.
