Warrington v Salford: In-form stars set to prove the difference

Whether or not they win their appeal against their six-point deduction, Salford Red Devils’ away trip to Warrington Wolves could well be the most important of the season for Ian Watson’s men.

Had Salford not been deducted six points for a breach of salary cap regulations, they would have been sitting in sixth place.

However, they currently find themselves five points adrift of the top eight with three games remaining, and are currently awaiting the results of their appeal.

Meanwhile, Warrington, looked like they were going to be the team leading the way as we head into the Super 8s, but a mid-season stumble has left them sitting in third place, three points off top spot.

The two sides’ meeting earlier this year included one of the defining moments of the season so far – Chris Sandow’s mammoth last-ditch drop goal.

The Australian’s one-pointer on the last play of the game maintained Warrington’s 100 per cent start to the season after they had been pushed extremely close by the Red Devils.

Salford were 28-12 up at half-time that night, before conceding 19 second-half points to fall to defeat. A repeat of a Salford Half-Time/Warrington Full-Time result is 6/1 this time around.

Since that game, Salford have been rocked by a six-points deduction for breaching the salary cap, but the united and hard-working nature of their squad – in stark contrast to Salford sides of recent years – means they’re still in with a shout of making the Super 8s.

They shouldn’t be written off, even against Super League’s highest scorers.

The Red Devils are 3/1 to pick up a win away at Warrington, who are odds-on at 1/4 to bag the two points and cut the gap between themselves and joint table-toppers Hull and Wigan to just one point.

Unsurprisingly, the Wolves’ drop in form coincided with the loss of Chris Sandow to injury, but he is back now to pull the strings in the halves.

Equally impressive for the second season running has been Ben Currie – who has 12 tries and 11 assists to his name.
