Warburton’s reward puts Rangers in strong position for title tilt

Rangers fans will be delighted to hear that both manager Mark Warburton and his assistant David Weir have extended their contracts just as the 2016/17 Ladbrokes Premiership season comes into view.

The Gers combo both penned 12-month extensions to keep them at Ibrox until the conclusion of the 2018/19 season, giving the club a very stable platform from which to challenge from after a four-year absence from Scotland’s top division.

Warburton said: “It’s a privilege for me to be here in this position and for David with his status at the club.

“It’s a great place to be and we have extended for another year until 2019. I have thoroughly enjoyed being at Rangers. It is a privilege to be Rangers manager.”

Despite an opening hiccup in Europe, Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic are the 1/4 favourites to go on and lift a sixth consecutive Premiership crown.

Rangers are 3/1 shots to make their top-table return a very happy one indeed for the blue half of Glasgow, while last season’s runners-up, Aberdeen, are next at 12/1 to hoist the 2016/17 Ladbrokes Premiership trophy aloft.

Following on from a flurry of high-profile signings during the summer transfer window, not least the captures of Joey Barton and Niko Kranjcar, the renewed commitment from the boss adds to the growing sense of optimism surrounding the Ibrox giants after a difficult few years for the club.

It looks like Warburton and Weir have been deservedly rewarded for the style in which the club stormed back to the big time, scoring 88 times en route to sealing the Ladbrokes Championship title last term.

The step up in quality will certainly be noticeable in the upcoming campaign but, from the outside at least, the preparations appear to be going very well.

Just how well will be revealed when Warburton’s side kick off 2016/17 Ladbrokes Premiership proceedings with the visit of Hamilton Academical, for a match the Blues are 7/20 to take all three points from.
