Tottenham capture the Premier League signing of the week
When he’s been in the white and blue shirts of Tottenham, Harry Kane has been nothing but sensational over the past two seasons. But after making over 100 appearances in the last two years, boss Mauricio Pochettino has decided to ease the burden and in doing so complete what we reckon is the Premier League signing of the week.
Spurs have moved to land AZ Alkmaar’s hotshot Vincent Janssen in a deal valued at around £17m.
The Dutch international burst onto the scene last season with a scintillating 31 goals in 49 appearances for the Amsterdam club, including 27 in 34 Eredivisie games.
It was the 21-year-old’s form since the turn of the year which really caught people’s eye however, with Janssen hitting 23 goals in just 20 matches, including a run of scoring in eight consecutive fixtures.
That spell included two braces, one hat-trick and a four-goal haul, and AZ quickly came under pressure to keep hold of their newly-found prize asset.
Tottenham won the bidding war, and there’s plenty to suggest this latest Dutch import will be more of a Ruud van Nistelrooy than Afonso Alves.
Janssen’s stunning 2016 form thrust him into international contention, and he proved that was no obstacle either, netting from the spot on his debut versus England.
Two more goals for his country has really put him on the global scene, and Tottenham fans will be rubbing their hands with glee at what he and Kane can conjure this season.
At 5ft 11in and with a bulky frame, Janssen has the physical capabilities to handle the Premier League’s defenders, and his strike rate leaves no doubt over his goal scoring ability.
With a title challenge to build and a Champions League campaign to explore, Pochettino can now attack both, safe in the knowledge that he can call upon two of Europe’s most feared and sought-after strikers.
