Swansea looking to lure Spurs benchwarmer for possible record fee

There’s some haggling to be done yet, but Swansea have made their intentions clear by offering Tottenham a fee in ‘excess of £10m’ for winger Nacer Chadli.

That is according to The Times, while similar reports in the Daily Mirror claim that Spurs value their Belgian at £15m, which could prove a sticking point in negotiations.

Whether the Welsh side can find any wriggle room with the price remains to be seen, though there is a real possibility the Swans will break their club record outlay for a player who watched large parts of Spurs’ Premier League title tilt from the bench last season.

Only 10 of Chadli’s 29 top-flight appearances were starts for Mauricio Pochettino’s men in 2015/16.

However, that doesn’t mean that Chadli wouldn’t rate as a fine purchase for Francis Guidolin’s men, especially if the figure falls short of the £15m mark that Bournemouth just splurged on young Liverpool winger Jordon Ibe – scorer of one goal in 41 Premier League appearances.

Chadli may only have cost the north Londoners £7m from Twente three years ago to the month, but his 2014/15 campaign in particular revealed his keen eye for goal when more regularly deployed from the off.

The versatile attacker, blessed with two good feet, notched 11 times in the top flight and registered 13 overall during Pochettino’s first campaign as Lilywhites boss.

The Liege native also struck three times in four FA Cup run-outs for Spurs last season, adding to three league goals.

Kept on the periphery last season by Pochettino’s preference to play Christian Erikssen and Eric Lamela in wide berths at White Hart Lane, the opportunity for more regular game time next season may well appeal to the 26-year-old.
