When Henrik Stenson looks back on his win at this year’s Open Championship, he can do so safe in the knowledge that our followers on Twitter have decided his success is the greatest of any major in golf history.

After defying the odds to make it to Sunday’s final round, the 33/1 shot fought it out with American Phil Mickelson – who was chasing his second Open title – and went on to bag the first major triumph of his career.

In what looked set to be a repeat of the 2013 Open Championship, Stenson and Mickelson went into Sunday’s final round neck and neck.

And by continuing his run of scores in the 60s over the weekend, the 40-year old Swede recorded an incredible 63 to beat Mickelson by two shots on the day and three over the weekend.

We gave voters our top four greatest major performances from over the years and let Twitter battle it out to choose a winner.

And Stenson’s success apparently tops Tiger Woods’ first ever major victory at the 1997 Masters, with 37 per cent of the votes going on that win, while 45 per cent went to the Swede.

Elsewhere, Louis Oosthuizen (8 per cent) and Jack Nicklaus (10 per cent) were left to fill third and fourth slots in our poll – Oosthuizen for his 2010 Open win and Nicklaus’ historic one-stroke victory over Tom Kite and Greg Norman in 1986 at the Masters.

Up next for Stenson is the PGA Championship in which he’s 16/1 to win outright.
