Punters taking a chance on Lionel Messi to Premier League this summer

Opportunistic punters have caused Lionel Messi’s odds of joining Man City this summer to take a tumble.

A spate of bets in the wake of comments from former Barcelona President Joan Laporta, have seen the bookies slash Messi’s odds of making the move to 9/1, from 20/1.

Laporta has been quoted this week saying there are ‘powers at Barcelona who no longer want Messi as a player’.

Any reunion between Messi and his former coach Pep Guardiola would also be a certainty to smash the current world record £86m fee Real Madrid paid Tottenham for Gareth Bale.

A Ladbrokes spokesperson said: “Messi to Man City wouldn’t just be the transfer of the summer – it would be the transfer of the century.

“ A number of fans are clearly getting excited about Man City pulling off the feat and the odds are looking less distant by the hour.”

Should the Citizens land the biggest deal in history, their 12/5 Premier League title odds will surely fall.

Guardiola will kick-off his new era when City host Sunderland on the opening weekend, and it’s 1/5 the former Barca man begins with a win.

But will he begin with Messi in his team once more?
