Poll Reaction: Matic to Chelsea is football’s best buy-back signing

Published:

Chelsea’s decision to re-sign Serbian defender Nemanja Matic has been the most successful buy-back move in football history.

That’s the verdict of today’s Ladbrokes poll, which quizzed Twitter on the best re-signed player in the game, in the wake of Mario Gotze’s return to Borussia Dortmund following three seasons at Bayern Munich.

Matic stormed today’s poll with a hefty 38 per cent of the vote, having performed superbly in the two seasons since his return to Stamford Bridge – helping the west London outfit lift the Premier League and League Cup double in 2014-15.

Cesc Fabregas helped himself to second spot with 23 per cent, with the midfield maestro returning to Barcelona for three successful years from 2011-2014, having exited the club as a teenage talent back in 2003.

He was narrowly followed by Robbie Fowler, who won the support of 22 per cent of you, with the man known as ‘God’ by the Anfield faithful, netting 12 times in 39 games on his return to the red half of Merseyside after a four-year absence.

Meanwhile, in last place came a man from the other Merseyside giants. Duncan Ferguson netted 41 times in six seasons after returning to Goodison Park following a dismal spell at Newcastle United – but ‘Big Dunc’ found himself out of favour here with just 17 per cent of the vote.

And Matic can further cement his reputation as a Chelsea great if he can play a part in Premier League success for the Blues this season. It’s 11/2 for Antonio Conte’s men to lift the title this season, while 1/2 says they finish in the top four.
