Middlesbrough title would mean bigger payout than Leicester win

Optimistic Middlesbrough fans backing their side to ‘do a Leicester’ have already left Ladbrokes with a potential payout over the £3m coughed up to Foxes fans last season.
Boro are proving the most popular of newly-promoted sides in the title betting, attracting 74 per cent of all wagers struck on ex-Championship sides, with the surge of bets including one of £437 placed in County Durham (potential return £437,000), as well as two individual bets of £200 (£200,000 return).
Of all the promoted teams, there’s no debating Boro are the most prepared for the upcoming season, with Hull City looking for a manager and Burnley still to make a big transfer this summer.
Altor Karanka’s men have already brought in eight players including three-time Champions League winner Victor Valdes, ex-Manchester City striker Alvaro Negredo and former Atalanta midfielder Marten de Roon.
And it seems those acquisitions have got fans dreaming of Premier League glory, as the odds of Boro following in the Foxes’ footsteps have already been cut to 750/1, from 1000/1.
Middlesbrough aren’t the only side being backed off the boards though, with the bookies reporting similar bets on a number of this season’s rank outsiders.
One customer has placed £500 on Sean Dyche’s Burnley to win the title at 1000/1 while another stands to win just short of £200k should Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth pull off an almighty upset.
A Ladbrokes spokesperson said: “Leicester fever has spread across the country but it looks like it’s Teesside where there has been the biggest outbreak. We’re not even into August yet and Boro fans have already left us with a bigger potential payout than the record sum shelled out to Leicester backers last season.”
