King Of Stats: Hills to master the Molecomb at Goodwood
The Molecomb Stakes is a Group 3 race on the second day of the Glorious Goodwood Festival.
Charlie Hills has already celebrating one victory on the opening day of the meeting when Dutch Connection triumphed in the Lennox Stakes and according to our King of Stats, he is well positioned to train another on the second day.
Here is the statistical breakdown of the Molecomb Stakes:
13 of the last 14 winners had previously secured victory over 5f
Three of this year’s 12-runner field are still to taste success over the Molecomb Stakes distance and so are removed from the shortlist. Sportsmanship and Yalta are making their debuts over the trip and Just An Idea has been beaten on all three previous attempts.
10 of the last 14 winners finished in the first two in their most recent start
Out goes Global Applause thanks to being a beaten favourite in fifth at Ascot and Rapacity Alexander, who occupied the same spot when contesting a Group 3 in France.
11 of the last 14 winners had raced no more than twice previously
The Last Lion can call upon the experience of five prior runs and Rainbow Mist has been seen four times before, while Big Time Baby and Shamsaya have visited the racecourse on three occasions.
Nine of the last 14 winners foaled in either February or March
This is bad news for Kyllang Rock, who was a late starter in April.
As a result the field has been narrowed down to the two runners who have triumphed on their sole start to date – Nayyar and Springboard.
The form of the latter’s success in an Auction Stakes looks particularly weak, with the two runners to be seen again so far in superior company both finishing stone last.
Hills’ Nayyar did at least beat a rival that has gone on to win a maiden when landing a Novice Stakes at Chepstow and he is a half brother to two other horses to have secured victory as two-year-olds in group contests.
The trainer also won this race as recently as 2014 with Cotai Glory.
