Griezmann voted as your player of Euro 2016 in Twitter vote

| 11.07.2016

It’s amazing to think that this time two years ago, Dimitri Payet was without an international cap to his name, Gareth Bale was playing for a Welsh team not expected to qualify for Euro 2016 and Antoine Griezmann was available for around £24m.

But those are the names that set this year’s tournament alight, between them scoring 12 goals and assisting five.

And although his team could only finish as runners-up to Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal, Griezmann was this afternoon chosen by Twitter as your player of the tournament with a huge 59 per cent of the overall vote.

He opened the scoring in the 90th minute against Albania in the groups, single-handedly pulled France back from a goal down against Ireland in the last-16 with a brace, broke Icelandic hearts with a cheeky chip in the quarter finals and made French fans believe with a goal in each half against world champions Germany.

Not a bad month, then.

With Griezmann running away with it, that left Payet and Bale to battle it out for second place, and while both scored vital goals in the group stages, it was West Ham’s Payet who took 18 per cent of the vote while Bale grabbed the other 14 per cent.

The remaining 9 per cent went to the ‘Other’ category, with Twitter users suggesting names such as Pepe, Kevin de Bruyne and, wait for it, Raheem Sterling.

It’s safe to say the right man won this one, and if there’s one trophy that is up there with the Euros, it’s the trophy of recognition from our Twitter followers.

Chin up, Antoine.
