Glorious Goodwood Golden Mile: King of Stats swerves hotpot

Published:

The King of Stats re-adjusts his Glorious Goodwood sights to the Golden Mile, live on Channel 4 at 15.10, with a 22-runner handicap perfect punting ground for big-priced winners.

This hasn’t gone to the favourite for almost a decade and produced four double-digit-odds winners in the past seven years, three of those at 20/1 or over, so there’s hope in the hills of West Sussex.

Eight of the last 10 winners were aged four or under

A stat that chucks out a few of the fancied horses behind Michael Bell’s very warm 3/1 jolly Franklin D (no other runner currently warrants a single digit quote), with 10/1 joint second-favourite Donncha copping it here.

He joins Here Comes When, You’re Fired, Master The World, Hors De Combat, last year’s winner Belgian Bill (now eight-years-old and 14/1), Boomshackerlacker, One Word More, Jailawi, Let Hawill, Can’t Change It, Gabriel’s Kaka, Red Avenger and Solar Deity.

That’s a fierce bloodletting from one stat, with 14 runners biting the dust, but with a decent-sized field there’s still eight horses left.

Nine of the last 10 winners carried 9-3 or less in weight to victory

This is a devastating stat due to its potency, with only Laa Rayb’s 25/1 victory under 9-6 seven years ago bucking the trend.

It leaves us with Marco Botti’s 10/1 shot Azraff, the aforementioned Franklin D and Eve Johnson Houghton’s 33/1 outsider Room Key.

Eight of the last 10 winners went into the race off the back of a loss

Bell’s favourite hits the scrap heap thanks to a six-length stroll at Newmarket last time out, with Hors De Combat and Solar Deity far behind him that day.

Seven of the last 10 winners had an official rating between 96 and 104

There hasn’t been a Golden Mile victor running off as low a mark as Room Key’s 93 since Roger Charlton’s Third Set came up trumps for favourite backers under a feather-light 8-4 nine years ago, leaving Botti’s animal the standout on the stats.
