Frankie: My favourite horses? Big list but Golden Horn stands out

Published:

When it comes to reflecting upon my favourite horses and memories I’m pretty spoilt for choice. There are just so many and it’s difficult to whittle them down.

But there are certainly a few that stand out and one more than most. But more on that later.

I suppose my first really ‘big’ horse was Lammtarra when I was about 24. Winning a maiden King George and Arc will always remain a treasured moment.

Others in those early days included Balanchine who gave me my first Classic winner and Mark of Esteem who helped me land the 2000 Guineas.

Then I had a few fantastic years where we had the likes of Daylami, Sakhee, Fantastic Light, Grandera and Swain.

Those were proper heavyweights!

Singspiel, Treve was a tremendous mare…the list is endless.

I’ll also give a big mention to Fujiyama Crest who unfortunately passed away last year. He had a good life and he made me really famous when securing the Magnificent Seven at Ascot.

And then we come to more recent times with the likes of Authorized and Golden Horn.

My biggest ever thrill was winning the Derby on the latter.

Why?

Being older, I realised what the Derby really means. My kids were older too, we were part of a journey and we all really enjoyed it together.

It meant something very special and for that reason he stands out amongst a list of greats.

Ultimately, I’ve been very blessed and I’ve ridden some fantastic horses.
