Fan backs Barnsley star for England glory with #WhatAreTheOdds bet

Barnsley centre-back Alfie Mawson was one of the Football League’s most exciting young talents last season, proving an integral part of the Tykes’ success in winning promotion to the Championship.

And one punter is clearly enamoured with the 22-year-old, tabling a #WhatAreTheOdds request for him to play for England in Euro 2020 at 14/1.

There was a former Barnsley defender in the Three Lions’ Euro 2016 squad, in the shape of John Stones, though he failed to get on the pitch during the tournament. So, is there reason to believe that Mawson can out-do him?

Fans of the Oakwell outfit will certainly tell you what a special player the London-born centre-back is. Imposing, quick and tremendously good in the air, he’s also a regular scorer of goals, having netted seven times for the South Yorkshire outfit last season.

Chances are the former Wycombe Wanderers man will get more exposure playing in the Championship next season, meaning he could well catch the eye of a Premier League manager well before 2020 – though optimistic Tykes fans will be hoping Mawson brings top-flight football to the Pontefract Road End.

However, it’s still an ambitious shot, with League One the highest level the centre-back has played so far. But the rise of Jamie Vardy from Non-League stalwart to England regular shows the power of talent and determination – two qualities which the energetic Mawson has in droves.

So, fifty-odd years after Sir Alf Ramsey led England to World Cup glory, could another Alf be making his mark on the biggest stage for the Three Lions? We know one fan who’s certainly hoping so.

Barnsley are 20/1 to win promotion to the Premier League next season, and begin the season with a trip to Ipswich, where the visitors are 16/5 for victory. Can Mawson start the campaign with a bang and win the approval of the next England boss?
