Commissioned can sup Goodwood Cup success en route to Melbourne
Commissioned can land Goodwood Cup odds of 13/2 and make certain of his participation in his seasonal aim, the Melbourne Cup, in the process.
The six-year-old son of Authorized landed the Queen Alexandra Stakes over 2m5f on his first run for Gordon Elliott last month.
Despite coming into the contest on a rating of 97, he was able to defy Clondaw Warrior (108) off level weights in that conditions contest.
Oriental Fox (108) and Sandro Botticelli (107) were also down the field, despite having to give Commissioned just 3lbs and 1lb respectively.
The latter, who finished nine-lengths behind the Elliott horse in the Queen Alexandra, rubber stamped the form by besting several of the other beaten horses in a 2m listed contest at Sandown next time out.
Encouragingly, Commissioned’s Ascot success was just his fourth ever flat run and his first since October 2013, when under the stewardship of Mark Johnston, so there should be improvement to come.
More heartening still, it took his record in the summer game to three wins and a second, with the sole blot on an otherwise perfect ledger a silver medal on his racecourse debut over an extended mile.
His previous flat victories had seen him destroy a Catterick maiden by 11l, before scoring in a 1m6f Musselburgh handicap.
As a result there is no reason to suspect he will be found wanting for pace when stepping back in trip by 5f at Goodwood.
Having bagged his flat laurels on going-stick readings from good-to-soft to good-to-firm there is little reason to fear faster ground either.
Last year’s winner Big Orange remains a formidable favourite for the Glorious meeting’s Thursday showpiece and warmed up for his title defence when besting the 122-rated The Grey Gatsby in a Newmarket Group 2 on his most recent run.
But the race did pan out in his favour at HQ, with Michael Bell’s five-year-old leading them round in Indian file from pillar to post, and he may not be as far ahead of the field as he seems.
