Can anyone overtake Griezmann for Euro 2016 Golden Boot?

Things are looking good right now for France striker Antoine Griezmann. With four goals in five games for Les Bleus so far at Euro 2016, he’s a goal clear of the chasing pack. But with his odds at 8/11, there could be plenty of value in backing one of the chasing pack.

We look at who can catch the Atletico Madrid man…

Gareth Bale – Wales: 13/2

The world’s most expensive player has also been arguably the best on the continent at Euro 2016, and his spectacular free-kicks opened the scoring against Slovakia and England, before he netted again in the 3-0 hammering of Russia. However, he’s not the man to back for the top-scorer crown.

With a tie against obdurate Portugal on the horizon, chances are that Wales might not have as many attempts as they mustered against the likes of Russia. And with Dragons hitman Hal Robson-Kanu now finding the net, there’s less pressure on Bale to get into scoring positions.

Verdict: Avoid

Olivier Giroud – France: 7/1

Considering the criticism he’s received this tournament, it’s easy to forget the 29-year-old has already netted three times for Les Bleus, including a pair of well-taken goals in the quarter-final clash against an Iceland side who had kept the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Kane at bay.

Admittedly, Giroud has missed a fair few chances during the tournament, but the service from France’s midfield means he’s likely to have plenty more of them. At this price, he could well give backers a good run for their money, though question marks remain over whether Didier Deschamps’ men can overcome Germany and reach the final.

Verdict: Could be worth a flutter

Cristiano Ronaldo – Portugal: 8/1

If such a thing were allowed, we’d bank on Ronnie having a bet on himself to finish as top scorer in France – and after a miserable opening-game display against Iceland, he’s certainly ramped his form up.

Still, he’s only managed to find the net in a single game so far, with a brace against veteran Hungarian keeper Gabor Kiraly the only night the Real Madrid man has made it onto the scoresheet.

With Portugal facing a tough test against a rock-solid Wales defence, it seems unlikely he’ll make up much ground on Griezmann tonight. This is one accolade which might be just out of reach for the Portuguese wing wizard.

Verdict: We’re not convinced, but stranger things have happened

Dimitri Payet – France: 8/1

The West Ham man appears to be having his own personal Goal of the Tournament competition right now, and he’s racked up several contenders already, with superbly-taken goals against Albania and Romania, as well as that spectacular curling winner against Romania, of course.

With the 29-year-old in red-hot form and not scared of trying his luck from range, chances are we’ll see him attempting to bamboozle Germany keeper Manuel Neuer from outside the box.

And with Die Mannschaft having conceded a whopping 14 fouls in their last game against Italy, he might get more than a few chances to use his devastating free-kick skills.

Verdict: Worth a punt

Hal Robson-Kanu – Wales: 50/1

He may have endured the longest wait between goals on this list, but with two strikes already to his name, the 50/1 for the currently unattached winger could prove very popular with fans of the Dragons.

Having already produced a goal which will go down in history – yes, we’re talking about that Cruyff-turn and finish – there can’t be another player in the tournament feeling more confident right now.

Admittedly he has some catching up to do on the likes of Bale, Giroud and certainly Griezmann, but in this wild and unpredictable tournament, who’d bet against him exposing Portugal’s patchy defence to stake a strong claim for the Golden Boot?

Verdict: Definitely worth a flutter
