Arise Sir Andy Murray, Sports Personality of the Year?

Fresh off the back of his latest Grand Slam triumph, we’ve cut the odds on Andy Murray being knighted before 2020, while he’s also now odds-on to be crowned Sports Personality of the Year for the third time in his career.

Following his straight sets win in yesterday’s Wimbledon final against Milos Raonic, Murray is now 10/11 to win this year’s BBC award.

And you can expect to see that price drop even further should Murray carry his fine form into next month’s Olympic Games in Rio, where he is now 7/2 to win gold for Great Britain.

The three-time Grand Slam title winner last night became the first British man since Fred Perry to win multiple singles trophies at Wimbledon.

And that achievement looks to have given Murray the upper hand for this year’s Sports Personality award. He’s ahead of Anthony Joshua (8/1), Jessica Ennis-Hill (10/1), Gareth Bale (10/1) and Jamie Vardy (12/1) in the market.

But it doesn’t end there for Murray, as we’ve cut his odds to 3/1 to receive a knighthood in the next four years.

Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes said: “Murray now looks set for a third SPOTY gong and we’re not ruling out a knighthood sooner rather than later either. His win capped off a great day for British sport with his fans nationwide cashing in to the tune of several million.”

After reaching an incredible 11 Grand Slam finals, Murray will have a second US Open win in his sights after the Olympic Games this summer.

And should the new Wimbledon champ win either of those two events, you can rest assured the BBC award will have his name on it.
