The Open Update: Can 50/1 shot Zach Johnson retain his title?

Published:

It’s a fittingly open field ahead of the Open Championship in Troon, with Rory McIlroy currently the narrow favourite at 6/1.

But the Northern Irishman will have to improve on his display at the U.S. Open earlier this month when he failed to make the cut. And there are plenty of contenders ready to take advantage if Rory has another wobble.

Jordan Speith is 7/1 having won two majors in 2015, while Jason Day (also 7s) has made the top-10 in his last five tournaments, and the world number one will be expected to mount a strong challenge.

Dustin Johnson could prove popular at 12/1 following his victory in Oakmont but he fell away poorly in the last Open Championship, barely making the top 50.

This year’s shock Masters winner Danny Willett is 25/1 to win his second major in the space of five months.

However, the most eye-catching price is surely on Zach Johnson, with the Iowa City native 50/1 to triumph in Troon.

With finishes in first, sixth and ninth place in the Open since 2012 and a recent T8 at the US Open, those backing last year’s champion to repeat the feat look set to get a good run for their money.
