Royal Ascot: Ballydoyle sleeper and Cheltenham surprise tipped
The Royal Meeting draws to a close once more, but there’s a plethora of top-level equine action still to come at Ascot, including our next best in the Group One Diamond Jubilee Stakes.
Read on for the reveal, with Ladbrokes giving money back* if your horse comes 2nd or 3rd in selected races.
NAP – 3.05: Sir Isaac Newton @ 10/1
Aidan O’Brien’s four-year-old has been blighted by expectation, with three odds-on turnovers obscuring a win and three seconds in seven races so far.
The last time Sir Isaac Newton was anything like these odds he came within 2¼l of victory, at this track 12 months ago, and while that was over a much shorter trip there was plenty of optimism after the Galileo colt’s recent 10f third at the Curragh, in similar conditions to which he’ll face in Berkshire.
With only two of the 16 runners going into the race off the back of a win, Sir Isaac Newton’s odds seem too good to miss.
NB – 4.20: Undrafted @ 8/1
This Wesley Ward sprinter can truly claim to be the Leicester of the meeting- reigning champion, yet double digits to retain the crown so doggedly won.
American Ward has become the sprint king of Royal Ascot, with three victories in the last 12 months alone including the Queen Mary Stakes, for the second year on the bounce (!), with Lady Aurelia a few days ago.
Frankie Dettori may have hopped off Undrafted in favour of Charlie Hills’ jolly Magical Memory, but keeping the faith looks the value call.
Lively Longshot – 3.40: Wicklow Brave @ 14/1
Willie Mullins doesn’t send too many horses to Royal Ascot, and hasn’t had a winner from three so far this week.
He sends quite a few to Cheltenham, where Wicklow Brave hacked up by 8l at 25/1 on the final day of the Festival 16 months ago, with two wins and four places claimed from 10 races since.
At a meaty price, and with William Buick back on board after steering the seven-year-old to a respectable second last time out, the Mullins horse has to attract each-way money.
