Man Utd fans won’t lap up third homecoming story of summer

Published:

Manchester United transfer rumours have been unusually loaded with former players this summer, but few Red Devils fans would complain if Cristiano Ronaldo or Paul Pogba strolled through the Old Trafford door again.

However, with Ronaldo unlikely to desert Real Madrid in the wake of a second Champions League success in just three seasons, and Pogba’s pursuit vulnerable to external forces, a third name in the homecoming frame has emerged.

For any United enthusiasts hearing this for the first time, make sure you are seated. Talksport, via reports from Turkey, suggest Jose Mourinho is mulling over a shock swoop for Nani.

Albeit the Premier League giants would be unwilling to meet the £6.3m release clause in the 29-year-old winger’s current contract with Turkish side Fenerbahce.

Nani is due to represent Portugal at the Euros and since last turning out for United in August 2014 after an apparent slide in form, he has found his feet again at Fener, after a steady loan stint at boyhood club Sporting Lisbon.

Even in light of Nani’s upturn in form and fortunes however, the United faifthful are unlikely to welcome back a player whose career began waning wearing their club’s famous red, especially with his best years arguably behind him.

Nani’s United pinnacle arrived five seasons ago when his teammates bestowed their Players’ Player award on the somersaulting goal celebrator.

That was one of two campaigns in which Nani hit 10 goals for the Red Devils and a subsequent return to double figures for Fenerbahce (12), en route to the Turkish Super Lig’s runner-up spot may be what has sparked the unexpected interest.

However, Portugal’s stand-in skipper was barely visible against England in a recent friendly and it will take something spectacular from the rumoured returnee at the Euros to convince United fans they wish to see him wear their club’s colours once more.
