Man United in the hunt for another German midfield star

Published:

Jose Mourinho is continuing to build his new-look Manchester United squad this summer, and one man hotly tipped to join the Old Trafford revolution is talented Wolfsburg midfielder Julian Draxler.

The 22-year-old was hugely influential for Die Wolfe last season, netting nine times in 35 games – a record many strikers would be envious of.

And the Gladbeck-born maestro also produced a number of assists domestically and in Europe, as his club side reached the Champions League quarter-finals.

However, their eighth-placed finish in last season’s Bundesliga means the Saxony outfit will not be back in Europe next season – a failure which looks likely to see Draxler exit the Volkswagen Arena this summer.

The Red Devils look to be leading the race for his signature, and having managed just 49 Premier League goals last season, word is that the north-west giants are targeting Bastian Schweinsteiger’s international teammate as the man to deliver goals from midfield in the coming campaign.

Borussia Dortmund’s Henrik Mkhitaryan is another name strongly linked with Old Trafford, but with Mourinho set to massively reshape the United squad this summer, Draxler could well arrive whether or not the BvB man also heads to Manchester.

And having already impressed at Euro 2016 with Germany, Mourinho could well choose to swoop for Draxler before more continental heavyweights begin sniffing around the former Schalke 04 youngster.

Having already netted against Slovakia in the knockouts for Die Mannschaft, it’s 66/1 that the 22-year-old finishes the tournament as top scorer – a long shot, but not impossible, for a player of such quality and fearlessness on the big stage.

With a 2014 World Cup winner’s medal in his possession, it’s 7/2 that the Wolfsburg man adds a Euros crown to his growing list of honours. But whether he’ll be returning to Germany after the tournament remains to be seen.
