Euro 2016: How the odds have changed for the final eight

We started with 24, and after England’s exit last night we are now down to eight teams at this summer’s European Championships. Some will be familiar names at this stage of major finals, but the quarter-finals also feature a couple of new faces.

After a slow start to the action in the group stages, the tournament is starting to come to life with some thrilling contests, but who will be crowned champions in just under a fortnight’s time?

Pre-tournament favourites France and Germany are still in the mix, but Spain have gone and Italy are coming to the fore, while Wales and Iceland will look to cause more surprises.

Here’s how the odds have changed for our eight remaining nations…

France

Pre-tournament 3/1 – Now 11/4

Pre-tournament favourites, hosts France are still the most likely victor according to the bookies. Have relied on individual moments of brilliance a little too often, but the concern for the seven other teams is that Didier Deschamps’ men are still to hit top form.

Germany

Pre-tournament 10/3 – Now 3/1

Looked suspect in their opening 45 minutes versus Ukraine, but as ever the Germans are getting the job done. Tore Slovakia apart and their attacking prowess now faces Antonio Conte’s Italian tacticians.

Belgium

Pre-tournament 10/1 – Now 4/1

A golden generation of players are beginning to show their brilliance, and that’s why they’re now 4/1. Ruthless versus Ireland and a late rampage saw them destroy Hungary 4-0. Offensively as good as any side in the tournament and are in the favourable half of the draw.

Italy

Pre-tournament 16/1 – Now 13/2

Many people’s team of the tournament so far. Took their eye off the ball versus Ireland but superb wins over Belgium and Spain have seen Gli Azzurri’s odds tumble.

Portugal

Pre-tournament 14/1 – Now 7/1

Still hard to gauge. Portugal laboured through a winnable group, and there was little in it versus Croatia. Odds have halved but how will Ronaldo and co cope versus top-class opposition?

Poland

Pre-tournament 50/1 – Now 16/1

A dark horse for many, Poland have a genuine shot at the semi-finals.  Matched Germany and showed a solid rearguard to hold off Switzerland in the last 16. Can trouble Portugal if they step it up a notch, especially Robert Lewandowski who has been kept quiet thus far.

Wales 

Pre-tournament 80/1 – Now 25/1

What a journey it’s been for Wales. Deservedly topped their group and took advantage of the knockout draw that came with it. Still considered unlikely tournament winners, but have players to trouble anyone on the counter.

Iceland

Pre-tournament – 125/1 – Now 40/1

The great underdog story of France 2016. Iceland deservedly knocked England out on Monday night, and went through Group F unbeaten. Very much the tournament outsiders, but who knows what could happen when they play the hosts on Sunday.
