England fans backing penalty perfection…not spot-kick sadness

Only three England fans nationwide have backed the Three Lions to go out of Euro 2016 on penalties, according to Ladbrokes.
A record-low £2 has been staked on spot-kick heartbreak across the country, with three fans wagering just £1, 75p and 25p respectively on Roy’s Boys suffering more penalty heartbreak at 4/1.
Odds of 4/1 are the longest ever offered on England getting knocked out of the tournament on penalties – their method of exit in five of the last nine major tournaments.
In recent years, punters have bet over £100,000 on England losing on penalties, across the industry, but with a slew of superb finishers like Jamie Vardy, Harry Kane and Wayne Rooney on the plane, Three Lions fans seem to have flung off their penalty fears.
It’s 5/1 England manage to knock any team out on spot kicks, just as they did to Spain during Euro 1996. That bet has been taken up by almost 10,000 fans already. Meanwhile, it’s 8/1 that Roy Hodgson’s men – fourth in the betting – win the Euros for the first time.
Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes said: “We’re normally inundated with cash for England to lose on penalties. This time round barely a penny up and down the country has been bet on a spot kick exit which must suggest confidence in the hoodoo ending is at a record high.”
The Three Lions begin their hunt for a Euros crown against Russia in Marseille on Saturday, with Hodgson’s men 10/11 for victory.
