Chelsea favourites to poach Euros star from West Ham

Published:

Dimitri Payet has established himself as France’s star man at Euro 2016, but West Ham fans may be anxious about their midfield maestro’s impressive displays, as his Euros displays are increasingly likely to land the 29-year-old a big-money move, with Chelsea currently the frontrunners.

Slaven Bilic signed the Reunion-born midfielder from Marseille last summer for the bargain fee of £11.25m, and the move payed instant dividends, with the free-kick magician scoring 12 goals and providing 15 assists in a sensational campaign for the Hammers.

However, that form has sparked interest from a number of European heavyweights, and the odds of Payet exiting the Hammers this summer have tumbled from 7/4 to 5/4.

Chelsea lead the way at 7/2, with Antonio Conte keen to revamp a Blues side who struggled last season. But they’re far from the only club with a chance of landing Payet’s signature.

Last season’s Champions League finalists Real Madrid (8/1) and Atletico Madrid (12/1) are both in the running, while it’s 9/1 that Payet stays in France beyond the Euros, by moving to Ligue 1 giants PSG.

Manchester United are also dark horses in the race for the midfielder’s signature, with Arsenal rounding out the English interest at 16/1.

A Ladbrokes spokesperson said: “Payet has been the star man at Euro 2016 so far and the big boys are lining up to take him from the Hammers. Don’t be surprised to see him swap the East End for West London this summer.”

For the moment, though, the ex-Lille midfielder’s focus will be on helping France beat Switzerland in their final group game, with Payet 21/10 to score anytime, following four goals in his last five outings for Les Blues.
