Belgium v Rep of Ireland: Back Belgians to win from behind
They may have failed to break down an outstanding Italian defence in Saint-Denis, but Belgium are set to find the net in a victory over Republic of Ireland – though the form book suggests Marc Wilmots’ men will do it the hard way.
Belgium’s last three wins have all seen De Rode Duivels come from behind to secure victory, while their last draw – against Finland – also saw a point rescued thanks to a late Romelu Lukaku equaliser.
Conversely, Ireland have surrendered victory in the last three games where they’ve led
That’s no surprise when you consider Martin O’Neill’s squad are the oldest at Euro 2016 and play a low-possession, counter-attacking brand of football which sees them pressuring the opposition from the get-go – a tiring tactic even for a more spritely outfit.
Belgium are also sure to be fired-up and ready to respond to the heavy criticism they faced following the Italy game, and with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku in their ranks, it’s hard to see the Boys in Green ceding less than two goals.
However, we’re also set to see at least one goal at the other end, with Belgium now having failed to keep a clean sheet in their last eight games – a run in which they’ve shipped goals to the likes Andorra and Finland.
With all that previous, De Rode Duivels to win from behind looks to be a very smart bet indeed at 11/1. Though those looking to play it even safer could well be rewarded by Belgium to win and both teams to score at 7/2.
In the match betting, the Belgians appear the men to back at 8/11, though those expecting an upset can back Irish victory (17/4) and a draw (11/4).
