What’s ahead for the Football League’s new arrival…Grimsby Town

Published:

Grimsby Town are back in the Football League after a six-year absence, following yesterday’s 3-1 win over Forest Green Rovers in the National League play-off final at Wembley. So, with the Mariners back in the big time, our traders peered into the looking glass to see what the future might hold for the Lincolnshire outfit.

Town have impressed this season under boss Paul Hurst, and the former Rotherham left-back is 7/2 to lead his side to another promotion next season, with 16/1 for Grimsby to win the 2016-17 League Two title.

If the likes of Omar Bogle and Padraig Amond can replicate their fine form in the Football League, another sensational season on the Humber is certainly possible.

Meanwhile, it’s 8/1 that the returning Mariners sink to relegation from the Football League in their first campaign.

Newly-promoted Grimsby turn their attention to the FA Trophy final against Halifax Town this weekend, but it’s the Football League Trophy where next season’s cup ambitions will lie.

It’s 20/1 that this piece of silverware heads to Grimsby in 2016-17, with the coastal club having last claimed this honour in 1998.

33/1 says Hurst’s men manage a triple-bounce with promotion from League One in 2017-18, which would return the Mariners to the second-tier of English football for the first time since 2003.

The most optimistic of Town fans may also be keen to back the 100/1 shot of their club reaching the Premier League by 2022.

Meanwhile, it’s 1000/1 that they lift the top-flight crown by 2026 and 5000/1 that they’re champions of Europe within the next decade.

A Ladbrokes spokesman said: “Grimsby Town’s talented squad and huge support mean they’ve got the potential to quickly rise through the leagues.”

“Leicester City have proven footballing fairytales can come true, so why shouldn’t we expect one at Blundell Park?”
