What does the future hold for brilliant Burton Albion?

Published:

Congratulations are due to Burton Albion who won promotion to the Championship following Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Doncaster Rovers.

On the back of a second successive promotion for Nigel Clough’s men who were playing in Non-League football as recently as 2009, we’ve looked at what the future could hold for the Brewers. Can the seemingly unstoppable Midlands side reach further heights?

After all, Clough’s sidehave boasted League One’s meanest defence this season, conceding just 37 times in 46 games, with Lucas Akins doing the business at the other end, hitting double figures for the season, including four goals in those crucial final three games en route to promotion.

Albion are 25/1 to make it three promotions on the bounce with success in next season’s Championship while it’s 80/1 that they go up as champions, just as they did in League Two last May.

And, for the most optimistic fans of the East Staffordshire club, we’re offering 500/1 for Burton to finish in the top four of the 2017-18 Premier League, while it’s 5000s that they win it and the same odds for the club to claim the Champions League crown within the next decade.

On the flipside, our traders do think it’s possible that the ambitious Brewers have met their match in next season’s Championship, with 5/4 that their visit to the second tier lasts just a single season.

However, optimists will rightly note that Burton have not suffered relegation from any division since 1974.

Following a season where 5000/1 shots Leicester have won the Premier League, can anyone rule out rising Burton pipping Manchester City and Tottenham to a top-flight title within the next few years?
