Walsall, Fleetwood and Scunthorpe set for success in League One

The final day of the League One season will decide automatic promotion, relegation and the play-offs.

As many as eight teams can have their fate altered in the last game, with disappointment and jubilation sure to be spread out in equal measure.

A point against relegation-threatened Doncaster Rovers would be enough to guarantee a spot in the Championship for Burton Albion, but a number of factors suggest they won’t be able to do so.

If history is anything to go by, Walsall will be able to leapfrog them into the promotion places.

Last season, second-placed Preston North End faced a team in 22nd, where Doncaster currently sit, and Colchester United were able to grab a shock win that saw MK Dons overtake the Lancashire club.

The Brewers have also won only one of their last three away games against teams in the bottom half, losing one.

Meanwhile, the Saddlers have won six of their last ten, better than their promotion rivals who have managed four in that run, and beat upcoming opponents Port Vale earlier in the season.

Goal difference would then decide who joins Wigan in the second tier and Donnie’s three wins against teams in the top-half have all been by at least two goals, a scoreline that would be enough to see Jon Whitney’s men promoted if they win.

Backing the Black Country outfit to finish in the top two is priced at 7/1.

A win for Rover wouldn’t be enough to keep them up due to Fleetwood’s superior goal difference, they would need a swing of 20.

Therefore, the fight for survival would be between the Cod Army and their neighbour Blackpool.

The Tangerines haven’t picked up a win in any of their last four outings, so regardless of what happens at Highbury, the host will be facing already doomed Crewe Alexandra, they should be backed for the drop at 1/33.

Scunthorpe, Barnsley and Gillingham will be battling it out for the final play-off place, with all of them facing sides in the top ten of the table.

The form book is with the Iron, they’re on a five-match winning streak, and seeing them make the play-offs is priced at 7/5.
