Everything has gone wrong for Aston Villa this season and they are wisely waiting on appointing a new manager, so that whoever comes in isn’t tainted by the current campaign.
The Villans are expected to announce their new boss at the end of the season, with former Leicester man Nigel Pearson the current favourite.
While it is true that Pearson was able to guide the Foxes into the Premier League and ensure safety, there are better options available to the West Midlands outfit.
Neil Warnock, who is priced at 14/1 to get the role, has such a strong promotion pedigree that the soon-to-be Championship side have to view him as a contender for the job.
The Rotherham United boss has taken teams up on seven different occasions, with five separate clubs.
Scarborough were the first to feel the Warnock effect, winning the Conference to make it into the Football League in 1987.
Notts County and Plymouth Argyle both made the jump from the third-tier to the second under the English manager, while he also guided the Magpies to the top flight in 1991.
Huddersfield Town, Sheffield United and Queens Park Rangers have also all been taken to the top division of English football by Warnock, with his most recent promotion coming with the Rs in 2011.
While Pearson managed to take Leicester up twice, from League One and the Championship, over two spells at the club, Villa still have to be cautious in approaching the man favourite for the job.
The Foxes never should have got into the position where they were in the third-tier so making it out of that division was to be expected, while there are still question marks over Leicester’s most recent promotion.
Allegations that the club didn’t comply with Financial Fair Play continue to be investigated by the Football League and the money pumped into the side clearly gave Pearson’s men an advantage.
Furthermore, the 52-year-old’s off-the-pitch antics are well documented and for a club like Villa, who have dealt with such problems all year, it would be wise to avoid more difficulties.
