Traditionally it’s the Championship Play-off Final which gets handed the title of the world’s richest game, but in a quirk of fate, this weekend’s clash between Middlesbrough and Brighton falls into that bracket too.
Both teams are on level points in England’s second-tier, and it’s more or less a winner-takes-all scenario.
Boro have the advantage of knowing that a draw would also see them through, but Chris Hughton’s Brighton must win if they want that Premier League jackpot.
With the extra television money kicking-in next season, whoever triumphs at the Riverside will pocket an incredible sum of around £170m.
That’s by far the biggest windfall in football, but which are the other five richest fixtures in the game?
World Cup Final – £35m
No surprises here.
The biggest football match on the planet sees the winner handed a tidy £35m.
It’s just a shame they only play it every four years…
Champions League Final – £11.8m
Topping the list of annual tournaments comes the Champions League, with one of Atletico or Real Madrid heading towards a winner’s cheque for almost £12m.
With so much extra dollar to be made during the competition however, the victorious side could take a total loot of almost £50m in prize money from one season.
European Championship Final – £5.8m
It may be somewhat surprising the European Championship Final doesn’t have as much at stake as Europe’s top club competition.
It’s certainly pocket money by the World Cup’s reckoning, but whoever comes out on top in France’s showpiece this year will pick up a handy £5.8m, plus a further £10-15m from prize money during the tournament.
Just enough for a week in a nice hotel along the French Riviera.
Europa League Final – £5.1m
Europe’s second-tier club competition sends the victors a shade over £5m for winning the final.
This year’s prize offering is some 60 per cent more than in recent years, which more often than not has been claimed by 2016 finalists Sevilla.
Club World Cup – £5m
The final entry on our list comes from the Club World Cup.
This tournament has taken place everywhere from Morocco to Tokyo, but one thing which doesn’t change is the tidy sum on offer, with a winners’ cheque of £5m more than making up for those hotel expenses.
Add all five of these together though, and you still only get £62.7m, not even a third of what’s on offer in the Championship this season!
