Super League: Returning Sandow to lead Warrington to victory
The return of half-back Chris Sandow will be just the boost Warrington Wolves need to move back to the top of Super League with a win over struggling Leeds Rhinos tonight.
Warrington have led the table for most of the season but were knocked off their perch by Hull FC last week, with defeat at the Magic Weekend and Wigan’s win last night combining to move them down to third.
Leeds, on the other hand, could not have endured a worse 2016. With just three wins to their name from 15 attempts, last year’s treble winners are rock bottom of the table and require a huge turnaround if they are even going to make the top eight.
And that turnaround doesn’t look like happening at the Halliwell Jones Stadium tonight, as the Wolves welcome back Sandow; their inspirational half-back who was key to their fine start to the season.
Warrington have lost four from six since Sandown picked up a hamstring injury against Wigan at the beginning of April, and if he is anywhere near his full fitness tonight he will be a huge thorn in Leeds’ defence. With eight tries from nine appearances this season, he’s a good bet at 6/4 to add to his tally at anytime.
The two sides opened their 2016 campaigns against each other, with the Wolves sneaking a 12-10 win against the odds. This time around though, they are well odds-on to claim the victory (1/4) and could rack up a big score against a frail looking Leeds team who are 3/1 to win.
The Wolves haven’t been at their best in recent weeks by any stretch of the imagination, but have still scored 130 points in their last four games. With Sandow back in their ranks tonight, they should have even more fluency in attack and are 7/4 to score more than 35.5 points.
