Queen’s Park and Edinburgh City toast play-off success
Published:It’s been an historic day in Scottish football with Glasgow-based Queen’s Park securing promotion to Ladbrokes League 1 and Lowland League champions Edinburgh City beating East Stirlingshire to clinch a berth in Ladbrokes League 2 next season.
The former suffered a 1-0 defeat to Barry Ferguson’s Clyde in the second-leg of their Ladbrokes League 1 play-off final at Hampden Park but held firm to go through 3-2 on aggregate.
Meanwhile, there was plenty of drama at Ochilview Park too as an 87th-minute penalty from Douglas Gair secured Edinburgh City a 1-0 victory (2-1 on aggregate) that makes them the first club to be promoted via the pyramid system.
East Stirling, who had Reece Donaldson sent-off for conceding the spot-kick, saw their 61-year association with the senior leagues come to an end as a result of their defeat and subsequent demotion.
But despite the bitter blow, The Shire were quick to show a touch of class.
We’d like to offer our congratulations to @spfl‘s newest member @EdinburghCityFC after a hard-fought pyramid play-off win today.
