Manchester United go all out to land Real Madrid star

Manchester United have identified Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane as their number one transfer target this summer, according to reports.

The Red Devils have long been credited with an interest in the France international but are now said to be honing in on a deal.

The 23-year-old has featured 32 times for the Bernabeu outfit this term but is said to be considering his future after being benched for the club’s recent important fixtures, including the Champions League semi-final win over United’s bitter rivals Manchester City.

According to French publication Le 10 Sport, Varane is well aware of the interest in him from around the globe and will seek a move away this summer unless he receives reassurances that he remains in Real manager Zinedine Zidane’s first team plans.

United are unlikely to have a clear run at the player, however, with Bayern Munich and PSG also keeping tabs on Varane’s situation.

Much is likely to depend on who is in the dugout at Old Trafford next season with Jose Mourinho – favourite to succeed Louis van Gaal – having worked with and been impressed by Varane during his time in Madrid.

United are next in action in tomorrow’s early kick-off, which sees the Red Devils travel to Carrow Road to take on an ailing Norwich City.

The visitors are priced at 17/20 to win and keep their faint top four hopes alive – lose and they can likely forget about signing players of Varane’s ilk regardless of who is in charge.
