Man Utd on transfer collision course with City over Schalke star

Published:

Bereft of Champions League football, Manchester United’s transfer market pulling power is sure to be fully tested this summer up against neighbours Manchester City among others. The potential signing of Leroy Sane is a case in point.

The subject of much transfer tittle-tattle this season, Shalke’s 20-year-old winger is reportedly a target of the Manchester rivals this summer.

Sane’s exploits on Schalke’s right flank this season, from where he’s netted nine times, have led Germany manager Joachim Low to include the exciting talent in his provisional Euros squad.

The stir hasn’t been lost on either incoming City manager Pep Guardiola or United’s influential chief executive Ed Woodward either according to the Guardian.

Having witnessed Sane’s emergence as a Bundesliga force at close quarters over his last two seasons managing Bayern Munich, Guardiola doesn’t require convincing of his talents.

Man United’s penchant for signing young, hungry attacking players in recent times makes him an obvious Louis van Gaal type too.

It could become a straight out battle between red and blue for his services. Although City’s pockets are among the deepest in world football, money is seldom a concern for the big-spending Red Devils either.

Being exiled from Europe’s top competition next season is likely to be the more prohibitive issue for United.

Sane’s current employers will be joining the Premier League’s fifth-placed side in the Europa League group stages next season, so in terms of an upgrade on that front, City is the logical choice.

However, should LVG ride out yet another blinding sand storm of speculation, as is expected, then at least the Dutchman has shown any perspective signing that Old Trafford is a stage for young players deemed good enough.
