Liverpool v West Ham epic voted greatest ever FA Cup final

Published:

The 2016 FA Cup final is now just hours away and as is the custom on the eve of the Wembley showpiece we’ve been indulging in a little bit of dewy-eyed nostalgia.

More to the point, we’ve been asking you to vote on which final tops the lot and it’s perhaps no great surprise to see the thrilling contest between Liverpool and West Ham take the spoils.

Also referred to as ‘The Gerrard final’, the 2006 show-stopper certainly contained its fair share of drama.

But unlike the 120-minute rollercoaster that brought the Reds joy in Cardiff, there was nothing close about our poll result.

Liverpool v West Ham took 53 per cent of the vote with Wigan’s victory in 2013 deemed the runner-up on 23 per cent (we’re not sure either).

That left Arsenal’s 2-0 success over Chelsea in third although it was the introduction of the ‘Other (please comment)’ option that really brought this debate to life.

Eric Cantona’s decisive strike for Manchester United against Liverpool in 1996 received a mention alongside some shout-outs for the 1987 thriller between Coventry City and Tottenham Hotspur.

A few Nottingham Forest and Derby County fans also got involved although we’re still not quite sure how to respond to references to the 1898 decider.
